‘Forever Chemicals’ Linked to Breast, Ovarian Cancers
A group of chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)– nicknamed ‘forever chemicals’– appear to be present at higher levels in women who have developed breast, ovarian, skin, and uterine cancers, according to some new research.
PFAS are synthetic chemicals that have been used in a variety of everyday products since the 1950s, particularly in anything that is nonstick or stain-resistant. They have displayed endocrine disrupting properties, which has led researchers to consider whether they might play a role in hormonally active cancers.
In the study, researchers analyzed concentrations of 7 different PFAS as well as 12 phenols/parabens (chemicals commonly used in plastics) in over 26,000 individuals. They found that various PFAS were associated with ovarian, uterine, and breast cancer. Also, higher exposure to PFDE, PFNA, and PFUA (all types of PFAS) almost doubled melanoma risk.
Some phenols/parabens, including BPA and BPF, were also linked to a higher risk of ovarian, uterine, and breast cancers. The study was only able to establish an association, not causation, but offers more evidence in favor of getting away from plastic and products like nonstick cookware.
Almonds Are Good Weight Loss Food, May Boost Cardiometabolic Health
Most nuts are high in fat, which has led to a misconception that they cause weight gain, but a new study has found that almonds can be very beneficial as part of a weight loss diet plan. In addition, participants who ate almonds experienced improvements in cardiometabolic health.
The study (funded by the Almond Board of California) involved 106 participants who all followed a 9-month energy-restricted eating plan designed to help with weight loss (first 3 months) and weight maintenance (last 6 months). They were divided into 2 groups that consumed either almonds or a carb-rich snack as 15% of their energy intake.
Both groups experienced similar weight loss results, losing about 9.3% of body weight. However, only the almond group improved their cardiometabolic health– a measure of risk factors for heart health and metabolic disorders (like diabetes)– by the end of the study.
“Nuts contain unsaturated fats – or healthy fats – which can improve blood cholesterol levels, ease inflammation, and contribute to a healthy heart,” said Dr. Sharayah Carter, a researcher. “Additionally, nuts have the added benefit of making you feel fuller for longer, which is always a pro when you’re trying to manage your weight.”

12 Amazing Health & Anti-Aging Benefits of Rosehips
Rosehips are the ruby red “fruit” that appears on rose bushes after the petals fade. They are packed full of immune-boosting vitamin C as well as antioxidants that fight inflammation (and possibly cancer!). Rosehips also boost gut and heart health and may even ease arthritis pain. Plus, when eaten or pressed into a nutrient-rich oil, rosehip is excellent for aging skin and has shown potential for boosting collagen and fading the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots. (More)
Adult Education Classes May Help Lower Dementia Risk
Education is one of the recently named risk factors for dementia with higher levels of education thought to have a more protective effect on the brain. But the good news is that it’s never too late to start learning again. As a case in point, a recent study has found that taking adult education classes may help lower the risk of developing dementia later on. In fact, any type of intellectual activity can help protect your brain function, so keep challenging your mind! (More)
Social Support, Exercise Key to Recovery After a Heart Attack
Many people who suffer a heart attack experience a lower quality of life afterwards, but this isn’t inevitable. Some new research from Denmark has found that heart attack survivors can experience the same quality of life as the general population 20 years or longer after the event. The secret? Well, the ‘normal suspects’ of a healthy diet, exercise, and less stress all play a role. But experts also pinpoint support from friends and family as a key piece to recovery and quality of life that often gets overlooked. (More)
Phthalates Linked to Higher Risk of Postpartum Depression
Phthalates are man-made chemicals commonly present in personal care products and plastic packaging. They can enter the human body through food, skin absorption, and inhalation and may accumulate over time. The health effects of phthalates aren’t fully known, but some recent research found that higher urine levels of phthalates were linked to a greater risk of postpartum depression between 2 weeks and 12 months after delivery.
